Franz Joseph Haydn--Austria

Symphony No. 94 is called “The Surprise” because of a sudden loud chord that appears at the end of some otherwise quiet music.  Composer Franz Joseph Haydn was known for his sense of humor and said he simply wanted to surprise the audience with something new.  This second movement is a theme and variations.  Haydn’s original idea returns four times, each time changed in some way.
