Carlos Chavez--Mexico |
There are a number of tools composers use when creating music. At each grade level we focus in different ways on these six areas: Duration, Pitch, Tone Color, Expression, Design, and Cultural Context. Listen to “Toccata for Percussion” by Mexican composer Carlos Chavez and focus on the rhythm. Notice the patterns that repeat (ostinato) and how the music gets faster and slows down (tempo). It’s hard to keep from tapping your foot to the music—that’s the beat. | |
