In
BALI
,
the arts are very important and nearly every villager is a musician,
singer, dancer, sculptor, painter, or actor.
The Balinese believe they are fulfilling a religious duty when they
plan GAMELAN music. A gamelan
orchestra is made of different sized metallophones, large suspended gongs
, smaller gongs mounted horizontally in racks, small cymbals and a pair of
drums. The music is pentatonic
(5 note) and each piece is based on a single melody line performed on the
large metallophone. The word "gamelan" comes from the Javanese word "gamel",
meaning to strike or hammer.
