| A strong Spanish, but also
Mexican, Colombian and
Caribbean
, influence is evident in the music of
GUATEMALA
. The major tonality,
scale-like melodies, simple chords and 6/8 meter with accents on the 3rd
and 5th beats give this music its syncopated Latin feel. The
Guatemalan marimba is the most
distinctive and popular instrument of this country and was probably
introduced from African in the late seventeenth century.
