The Bauls are members of a
religious sect in
West
Bengal
in
INDIA
and in neighbouring
Bangladesh
.
They believe in the Hindu philosophy and like wandering minstrels
they move from village to village, entertaining the people with music and
dance and passing on their spiritual message through poetry which they
compose and sing themselves. The
Bauls are skilled musicians and play a
variety of instruments including
the EKTARA, a single-string instrument
played with a plectrum (pick). The
changing times have brought changes for
the Bauls and some of them have moved
into the cities where their music has
become popular, thought losing its
religious quality.
